Frequently Asked Questions
ABOUT THE PRODUCT:
How does the Smart Hydration jug measure fluid intake?
The jug contains a patented volume sensor housed in a sealed compartment in the base. The sensor detects changes in fluid level each time a drink is poured or consumed. Measurement is automatic: there are no buttons to press and no action required from the resident or care staff. The sensor technology is protected by two granted UK patents (GB2623000 and GB2643977B) and a pending US patent application (18/566,379).
Does the jug look different from a normal care home jug?
The Smart Hydration jug is designed to look and feel like a standard drinking jug. All sensor and communication electronics are sealed inside the base, out of sight. Residents use it exactly as they would any other jug.
Can residents with dementia or cognitive impairment use it?
Yes. The jug requires no interaction from the resident at all. There are no buttons, no screens and no learning curve. Residents simply drink as normal, and the jug records fluid intake automatically. This makes it well suited to residents with dementia or limited cognitive function.
How accurate is the measurement?
The patented sensor records every change in fluid level automatically, removing the human error inherent in manual paper fluid balance charts, which studies have shown are frequently inaccurate or incomplete. Contact us for detailed accuracy specifications.
What is the battery life?

FOR CARE HOMES:
How does Smart Hydration help with CQC compliance?
The Care Quality Commission expects care homes to maintain accurate records of residents' fluid intake. Paper fluid balance charts are a common point of failure in inspections because they are often incomplete, illegible or inaccurate. Smart Hydration provides continuous, automatic, timestamped digital records of fluid intake for every resident, giving care homes auditable evidence of hydration management that is always up to date.
Will it reduce the workload for care staff?
Yes. Manual fluid balance charting is time consuming and unreliable. Care staff currently have to observe, estimate and record fluid intake on paper for every resident, every shift. Smart Hydration automates this process, and staff receive alerts only when a resident needs attention.
How does the alert system work?
Each resident has a personalised daily fluid intake target set in the dashboard. The system tracks intake against this target. When a resident falls behind, the system alerts care staff via the dashboard and mobile app. A traffic light view (green, amber, red) shows every resident's status at a glance.
Can it be used across multiple care homes?
Yes. The dashboard supports multi-site management. A care home group can oversee fluid intake data across all its homes from a single login, while individual home managers see only their own site.
How much does Smart Hydration cost?
Contact us at support@smarthydration.co.uk for current pricing and pilot programme details.
What about infection control and cleaning?
The sensor compartment is fully sealed in the jug base, isolated from the drinking area. Contact us for the detailed cleaning and infection control protocol.
TECHNICAL:
What data does Smart Hydration collect?
The system collects fluid volume measurements (how much liquid was in the jug and how much was consumed), timestamped to the resident the jug is assigned to. It does not collect audio, video, biometric or location data.
Is Smart Hydration GDPR compliant?
Yes. Smart Hydration Limited is a UK registered company (Company No. 11169596) and complies with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. All data is stored in Microsoft Azure's UK South data centre, so data stays within the UK.
Does it need Wi-Fi or internet access?
The jug communicates over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to a gateway device. The gateway needs an internet connection (Wi-Fi or ethernet) to send data to the cloud. The jug itself does not connect directly to Wi-Fi.
Can Smart Hydration integrate with our existing care management software?
The system is designed for integration with care management platforms. Contact us for details of current and planned integrations.
